The toy that gets used

Once upon a time there was a Christmas when all the kids played. They all ran around with the happy buzz of the latest toy or coolest gadget. As the buzz wore off, they'd find themselves circling back to the large cardboard box from which came a new TV or large appliance you had managed to wheel from the Big Box and decorate with a bow. The box was the space in which they could pile-in and turn into a clubhouse, rocket ship or race car for all the brothers, sisters and cousins.

Now that the world is experiencing the death of the latest generation of retail, a new necessary evolution on how we use their buildings will need to unfold. Certainly, opinion will need come around on how we view them as assets.

Some can evolve and some can die. A great metaphor, example or idea for the Big Box can come from the kids and the cardboard box.

Let's make them places for our kids to learn, imagine and create a better plan for them the next time we forget our history.

If not education centric places of biz, how about health centric? Local marketplaces? Pet, kid, adult daycare centers? Recycled housewares transfer stations? Community mobilization centers (aka community centers), ??? Whatever the use it should be more centered around sustainability and less on one way consumption. The beauty is the central locations to the community, the shell and the giant surfaces (i.e. parking lots, roofs, etc.) that can serve as solar fields and permeable green spaces.
